Accepting Card Payments for Your Cabin: What Independent Owners Should Know
A practical guide for Hocking Hills cabin owners weighing in-person card readers, invoices and payment links for permitted direct bookings.

For an independent cabin owner, the question is not simply "Can I accept a card?" It is "How should guests pay when I have a lawful, permitted direct booking?" A small mobile reader can help at check-in; a secure invoice or payment link is often more practical when the guest is still at home.
Three payment situations—and three different tools
1. The guest books remotely
For an approved direct reservation, a secure payment link or digital invoice allows the guest to pay without the owner reading card details over the phone. Square offers payment links and invoices, subject to its published service terms and processing fees. Verify your refund, cancellation, deposits and tax approach first.
2. The guest needs to pay at check-in
A mobile reader may be useful for approved incidentals or walk-in payments, where legally and contractually appropriate. Square's free first reader for eligible US accounts is a magstripe swipe reader, not a chip or contactless reader. Many owners will prefer a modern tap/chip option or an electronic invoice rather than a swipe-only device.
3. You're running a full hospitality booking operation
A payment processor does not by itself manage availability, guest messaging, security deposits, booking contracts, lodging taxes or property-management synchronization. Compare dedicated booking and property-management tools if those are your real pain points.
Research Square's options for an independent owner
Read the current Square account and payment-link terms. Our tracked link selects Square's reader offer: the free first reader shown is the magstripe (swipe) model, not a chip/contactless device. Cabin owners should separately compare invoicing, remote payments, deposits and modern card-reading hardware for their actual workflow.

- Have a clear direct-booking agreement covering amount due, cancellation, refunds and guest responsibilities.
- Review applicable Ohio and local lodging taxes, regulations and recordkeeping requirements with qualified advisers.
- Compare processing fees on refunds, disputes and manually entered card payments.
- Confirm account eligibility, the difference between a swipe reader and chip/contactless devices, and which transactions the provider permits.
- Never collect full card numbers through HockingBNB's owner or traveler inquiry forms.
When a reader is not the right tool
If nearly every guest books remotely, start your research with secure digital invoices or payment links. A reader makes sense only where you actually take in-person payments. If most of your bookings arrive through a rental marketplace, use that marketplace's required payment and booking tools.
